A dissertation from the University of Chicago on the study of English grammar in American education before 1850. The study aims to trace the course of the rise and fall of grammar teaching, including the changing educational ideals and theories. It also aims to systematically arrange the varying methods of instruction used from 1750 to 1850 and relate these to changing views of grammar.
