The preface explains the author's interest in female education and his belief that rather than too much education spoiling women, it makes them more loving and a more positive (and religious) influence on the family. These letters have been adapted from their original form as lectures to students. They include topics such as study, conversation, religion, manners, dancing, temperance, marriage, duties to parents, spoiled girls, and teaching. There is also an appendix on female education.
