The author has Master of Arts and is credited as the author of other books. Boyd explains that his composition textbook is a culling together of numerous preceding texts on the topic, specifically, recent English treatises by Williams, Smart, Neil, and Harrison, and the standard works of Blair, Campbell, and Jamieson. He has also consulted the grammars of Clark, Murray, Fowler, Bullions, Goold Brown, Spencer, Greene, Butler, Tower, Bailey, Covell, and Mulligan. He also credits Welche's Analysis of the English Sentence, Tower's Grammar of Composition, Quakenbos's First Lessons And Advanced Course, and Parker's Aids. He claims that his wealth of experience as a teacher on the subject has given him a deeper understanding of what is necessary in a composition textbook. This book works its way through the most minute aspects of composition (capitalization, parts of speech, punctuation, etc.) through to larger concerns (style, hyperbole, subject matter, etc.). For each section, there are detailed lessons and examples. The Schultz Archive includes the entire text; however, there are numerous pages that are repeated or missing. Also, highlighter obscures the readability of some text.\r\n "],"license_tesim":["http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/"],"date_created_tesim":["1871"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/ff365828p?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-depositing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["ff365828p"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["The Lucille M. No information on the author is given, although the author is presumably one of the publishers. The preface explains that twelve-year-olds should be able to speak and write accurately, avoid vulgarisms, and detect errors. While most methods of teaching grammar incorrectly focus on memorization, this text is interested in teaching the practical use of language. This is done through observation (or perception) of correct models, imitation of those models, and finally construction of correct sentences. Observation of correct sentences is guided with questions. The text is organized into punctuation, objects, pictorial illustrations (pictures), brief narratives, poems to be rewritten into prose, letter writing, longer narratives, and activities of classifying words. The author is credited for authoring a number of other books on various subjects. Although the preface argues thought is the seed of composition, the writer must also first conquer/study spelling, grammar, punctuation, style, and clearness of expression before writing an acceptable composition. The two most important points in preparation are the proper formation of ideas and their correct arrangement. The book provides a long list of themes/topics for a composition, with each being broken into several sections for elaboration and discussion. Some themes/topics are given introductions and conclusions. Others contain probing questions, sample quotations for evidence, or claims for further exploration. A few are more complete, brief compositions for study and imitation. Topics/themes include politeness, umbrellas, letter on business, and the cowardice of crime. The Schultz Archive's copy is roughly the complete text, but many pages are blurred close to spine, making them either difficult or impossible to read in their entirety. \r\n "],"license_tesim":["http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/"],"date_created_tesim":["1871"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/wp988j884?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-depositing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["wp988j884"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["The Lucille M.
