From the submission abstract: Libraries, archives, and museums have traditionally preserved and provided access to many different kinds of physical materials, including books, papers, theses, faculty research notes, correspondence, and more. These items have been critical for researchers to have a full understanding of their fields of study as well as the history and context that surround the work.\r\n\r\nHowever, in recent years many of these equivalent materials only exist electronically on websites, laptops, private servers, and social media. These digital materials are currently very difficult to track, preserve, and make accessible. Future researchers may very well find a black hole of content: discovering early physical materials and late electronic records, but little information for the late 20th though early 21st Centuries. In other words, a portion of history, including the field of Mathematics, may be lost unless this electronic content--perhaps some content you have right now--is cared for properly.\r\n\r\nThe presenters will cover the issues surrounding Digital Preservation, including steps needed to make sure data is reasonably safe. Additionally they will pose a small number of discrete challenges and unsolved problems in the field of Digital Preservation, where Mathematicians may be able to help with analysis and new algorithms. The news remains good. At the 2010 census, fifty-four suburban Hamilton\nCounty communities and Cincinnati neighborhoods, over one-third of the total,\ncontaining 45% of the total population of the county, were at least modestly racially\nintegrated (Table 9).2 This continues trends that began as early as 1970 when seven\ncommunities achieved integration that persisted for at least forty years. At the 1980\ncensus, twelve achieved racial integration that lasted for at least thirty years. And at the 1990 census, ten became integrated with that persisting for at least the next twenty years. Together, twenty-nine communities have remained racially integrated for at least twenty years.\n\nAt the same time, the dissimilarity index (DI), a standard measure of residential\nintegration, showed improved black/white integration for both the city of Cincinnati and\nHamilton County as a whole (Table 1). Cincinnati’s DI dropped from 91.2 in 1950, its\nhighest point, to 64.8 in 2010. Hamilton County’s DI dropped from 82.8 in 1980, the\nearliest for which we have data, to 71.3 in 2010. This means that increasing numbers of whites and blacks are living on the same blocks in a number of communities here.\n\nThe desirability of these integrated neighborhoods has apparently remained steady over time. Although both the city and the county have lost population, the integrated\nneighborhoods have proportionally lost no greater population than the rest. Moreover, in the last decade, conventional wisdom to the contrary, several of the long-term integrated communities experienced increases in the white percentage of their population.\n\nWhen we looked at socio-economic conditions throughout the county as measured by\nseven indicators drawn from the census, we found a range of values for the integrated\ncommunities. Some are clearly in quite good shape and improving and some show signs of decay. On a scale that aggregates five of these indicators, integrated communities on the average fell between the values for the city of Cincinnati as a whole and for suburban Hamilton County. This is particularly good news as the declining economy has certainly hurt the African Americans population more than the rest of the population. Because of this, the integrated communities might be expected to show a greater decline than the rest of the county, and while some of them have been hurt, on the average, they seem to be holding their own in comparison to the rest of the county.\n\nFinally, the city of Cincinnati, which has long seen an increase in black population and a decrease in white population, in the 2000s saw a significant slow-down in the decline of white population and an actual decrease in black population. This suggests that the black/white ratio may stabilize in the city in the near future."],"license_tesim":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"date_created_tesim":["2011-10"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/j96021192?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-depositing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["j96021192"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["j96021192"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"sort_title_ssi":"HAMILTON COUNTY STABLE INTEGRATED COMMUNITIES 2010 UPDATE","human_readable_type_tesim":["Article"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["caseylcf@ucmail.uc.edu"],"nesting_collection__pathnames_ssim":["j9602118s"],"nesting_collection__deepest_nested_depth_isi":1,"_version_":1697102746884243456,"timestamp":"2021-04-15T10:41:42.006Z","score":0.00049999997},{"system_create_dtsi":"2017-10-27T01:36:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2018-11-26T19:23:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Dataset"],"id":"ff365c25g","accessControl_ssim":["9c4941d1-49d5-45fe-b35f-d15941089cd4"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["ff365c26r"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["ff365c26r"],"depositor_ssim":["meyeret@ucmail.uc.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["meyeret@ucmail.uc.edu"],"title_tesim":["Walter Langsam's Building Database"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2016-05-27T00:00:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2018-11-26T19:23:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"college_tesim":["Libraries"],"department_tesim":["DAAP Library"],"required_software_tesim":["Microsoft Excel"],"note_tesim":[""],"creator_tesim":["Langsam, Walter"],"description_tesim":["Database in Microsoft Excel of over 17,000 buildings. Introduction begins by claiming the unpopularity of composition among students, and by stating the study doesn't make a contribution to methods of composition teaching, but seeks to add a page to the history of American education. It addresses: when and where English composition first taught in American secondary schools, the rapidity of its introduction, when it became recognized as part of the curriculum, and methods used from 1750 to 1900. The chapters are: lack of composition teaching before 1750, the introduction of composition, the extension of composition teaching, 1820–1900, the influence of college entrance requirements on composition teaching, the development of method in composition teaching, and the conclusion.
