Solution-generation design behavior in general, and "reflection-in-action" in particular, can serve to differentiate designers, recognizing their personal reflecting when designing. In psychology, reflection is found a more robust tool to enhance task performance after feedback from a personal "device" that generates the process itself while interacting with visual representation. Differences among students' interior design processes appear in their solution-generation design behavior. A “think aloud” experiment identified solution-generation behavior profiles. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies showed how design characteristics unite, forming patterns of design behavior. A comprehensive picture of designers’ differences emerged.
The research aimed:
to identify individual design students’ solution-generation profiles based on design characteristics.
to show how reflection-in-action appearing in the profiles can serve to predict how novice designers learn and act when solving a design problem.
to enhance the uniqueness of reflection-in-action for designers as distinct from reflection in other fields.
Four distinct solution-generation profiles emerged, each showing a different type of reflective acts. Identifying reflection-in-action type can robustly predict how designers develop design solutions and help develop pedagogical concepts, strategies and tools.
A genetic algorithm was used to optimize performance of a fuzzy inference system acting as a controller for a magnetically actuated CubeSat. A solely magnetically controlled satellite is a nonlinear, underactuated system for which the uncontrollable axis varies as a function of orbit position and attitude; variation is approximately periodic with orbit position. Therefore, controllability is not guaranteed, making solely magnetic control a less than ideal option for spacecraft requiring a high degree of pointing accuracy or spacecraft subject to relatively large disturbances. However, for small spacecraft, such as CubeSats, with modest pointing and disturbance rejection requirements, solely magnetic actuation is a good option. The genetic-algorithm-tuned fuzzy controller solution was compared to a similar linear quadratic regulator solution that was tuned to minimize the cost function used by the genetic algorithm. Both were optimized with respect to a single set of initial conditions. The genetic-algorithm-tuned fuzzy controller was found to be a lower-cost solution than the linear quadratic regulator for the optimized set of initial conditions. Additionally, a Monte Carlo analysis showed the genetic-algorithm-tuned fuzzy controller tended to settle faster than the linear quadratic regulator over a variety of initial conditions.
Snow Mountain Ranch is a meditation on the elasticity of time and the veracity of representation. The focus is on careful observation and on a tension between the static and the dynamic. Shot from the patio of my hotel room at a YMCA Resort located just down the road from Camp Chief Ouray in Granby, Colorado, where I spent two summers a boy. The video begins as a single continuous take. We are witness to two unfolding narratives, happening at very different scales, the action of the weather and that of the cowboys. Both the movements of the sky and the action on the ground have been accelerated but not always to the same degree.
Packaging is an essential element of design for both consumers and businesses. Product packaging functions both as a communication tool for product information and for brand messages. In addition, the role of visual elements and messages on snack packages are not well understood. This is particularly true from the standpoint of influencing the selection of snack food in children, even though there has been growth in the economic power of children as a consumer group. Therefore, this study examines: 1) the role of design variables such as typography, images, and the stylistic combination of these visual elements in affecting children’s snack food selection; 2) the role of health messages on children’s snack food selections; and 3) the role of perceived ‘healthiness’ in influencing children’s snack food selections. Digitally- simulated snack package images were created and sixty children ages 9 to13 were recruited for this study. From these design variables, ‘preferred-selections’ and ‘perceived healthy-selection’ of children in this age group were identified.
Over the past 20 years the internet and technology boom has transformed education teaching approaches and techniques. The introduction of online courses has brought remote communication and collaboration to the center of the discussion. It’s no longer an option for faculty and staff to put their head in the sand and ignore this technological revolution. Even traditional courses and student service offices must engage in communicating and collaborating with students where they are, both in person and online. The presentation will include a walk-through of Professor Theis’ history of integrating cloud-based technology tools in his courses. There have been many ups and downs, successes and failures. He’ll then explain how he’s using one primary application called Slack to engage his students and prepare them for similar tools they’ll be expected to use in the workplace. He’ll discuss a step-by-step process to help higher education professionals determine if, when, and how to introduce or integrate industry-related cloud-based tools into their work with students. We’ll walk through the questions we need to ask when making these decisions. How is my student demographic currently communicating with their faculty and with each other? What are the standard communication and collaboration tools in the industry they may enter in the next few years? Are there processes or tools that I’m currently using that can be easily replaced with a cloud-based technology? Which tools are free for practitioners and students? Finally, he’ll help attendees create a plan and timeline for integrating one or two cloud-based technologies into their work.
