- This 12th Century B.C.E. Bronze Wine Vessel comes from the Anyang Province in China, dating to the Shang Dynasty, one of the earlier dynasties that ruled in ancient China. The shape of the vessel is a rectangular prism with a square base and 4 thick legs. The lid of this Fangyi is a roughly pyramidal shape with a knob that echoes the shape of the lid. This wine vessel was used for ceremonial purposes, most likely for ancestral worship. Not particularly used for only wine, these vessels also held cooked and raw meat, and grains or other foods, as an offering to the gods and ancestors. Alcohol held in the Fangyi was a liquor, made out of a grain called millet. Comprised of three registers each face of the vessel the same, the bronze is cast and carved to have dragon motifs, taotie masks, and a consistent thunder pattern spiral across the body of the Fangyi. The lid of the Fangyi also has taotie masks on each of sides. The dragons on the body of this vessel represent many things, but most importantly, a harbinger of good luck, prosperity, and consistent success. The taotie masks are elusive in Chinese culture- their original meanings have been lost, but they are thought to represent “animalistic energies… to heal and to offer solace in a world full of diffuse and supernatural forces,” or the finality of death. The spiral pattern is meant to emulate clouds and rolling thunder, symbolizing life-giving rain and abundance.

- As technology permeates day-to-day life, people have more and more ways to communicate. These forms of communication create a challenge for Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP). Research has shown people are posting on social media for medical help, but PSAPs do not have a way to receive these messages. This research aims to determine if using keywords and filter words can be used to find the actionable calls for help in the midst of the millions of posts made. Actionable is defined as containing enough information to determine the nature of a medical emergency and if is currently occurring or is recent enough that the poster needs help. To determine if this was true, the most prevalent types of voice medical calls to the Cincinnati Fire Department were determined for 2021. A set of keywords and filter words was created for each call type. Then tweets were captured over a period of seventeen hours and filtered using the word lists. The filtering showed there was a valid way to find actionable tweets, and that people were posting such things. By varying the word lists, the signal-to-noise ratio can be adjusted depending on the desires of the agency. as filtering became more strict, the number of missed actionable tweets increased, while the number of incorrectly labeled as actionable decreased.

- An exploration of the use of virtual reality technology in the context of diversity and inclusion training. This manuscript describes two studies: Study 1 was longitudinal and investigated the impacts of a VR-based bias training. Cognitive and affective empathy levels and impact on behavior, attitude, and knowledge before and after the training were measured to test the hypotheses that (H1) cognitive empathy levels would increase and (H2) individuals with higher initial levels of empathy would demonstrate more pronounced changes in cognitive empathy following the training. H1 was supported but larger changes were found in affective empathy levels. H2 was also supported as individuals with higher initial empathy levels showed higher levels of cognitive empathy after the training compared to individuals with lower initial empathy levels. However, again, larger differences were found in affective empathy levels. Qualitative data revealed a lasting impact nine weeks after the training that was not present in the quantitative data. Study 2 surveyed healthcare professionals who previously participated in a VR-based DEI training that focused on social determinants of health and empathy in healthcare professionals. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the longitudinal impacts of a VR-based DEI training by gathering qualitative data from the participants at least a year after they went through the training. The respondents reported a lasting influence from the training. Reasons for the discrepancy between the qualitative and quantitative results are discussed as are implications for organizations and future DEI training development and research.

- Fighting Post-Tenure Fatigue: Reclaiming Your Time and Redefining Leadership offers insights, strategies and personal examples of how the two mid-career librarians have managed to navigate academic librarianship as first-generation, BIPOC, cis-gendered women while also balancing parenthood on the road to achieving tenure. The chapter describes their bouts with post-tenure fatigue, a phenomenon familiar to many mid-career librarians. Early in their careers, academic librarians focus on fulfilling the requirements of the promotion process at their institution. These requirements often leave little room for personal fulfillment once day-to-day responsibilities and designated service requirements are met. This process can provoke feelings of stress and anxiety as they struggle to find their footing within the institution, and the larger areas of librarianship and academia. Most institutions provide a support system and other mentorship for professional growth and career development. Achieving promotion and/or tenure is an accomplishment to be celebrated and followed by a sigh of relief. However, in the days, months, and years afterward, tenured librarians can start feeling a lack of motivation, support, and career guidance. They often struggle to answer the question, “What next?” The co-authors will highlight strategies for dealing with this kind of post-tenure burnout. One strategy for mid-career librarians is to be intentional about how one wants to spend their time. Day-to-day responsibilities and leadership expectations tend to increase exponentially the longer one stays in a position. Therefore, mid-career librarians need to learn when and how to say no in some cases, in order to say yes to other possibilities. Readers will be encouraged to look beyond their core responsibilities and think about expanding their time into areas like strategizing, skill building, acting creatively, and strengthening relationships. The chapter will include questions the reader can use to reflect on how they are spending their time, as well as tips for examining and adjusting their time to align with their intentions. Another strategy for mid-career librarians is to take advantage of unexpected leadership opportunities. Rather than looking for a new position with formal leadership responsibilities, one can develop leadership skills by leading projects inside and outside of their institution. Examples include participating in initiatives with specific goals or professional service in the form of short-term committees. The chapter will include questions the reader can use to examine opportunities for new leadership roles. To illustrate these strategies, the co-authors will share their experience using the mid-career point as an inspiration to invest time into the BIPOC in LIS community. Through service on the ALA Spectrum Advisory Committee, the co-authors were able to lead projects, establish virtual networking events, support new librarians, and experience professional growth. As a result of this work, they were also introduced to new opportunities and professional relationships. This experience models how one can be more intentional about time and energy and grow leadership skills without changing jobs and moving into a leadership or management position.

- This paper explores the question of why it is important to apply culturally responsive teaching within the classroom, through creativity. Teaching diversity exposes students to a variety of cultural and social groups. This educational experience prepares students to become better citizens, within their communities. Through the creative process, students will examine topics which, both, encompass and promote diversity. Additionally, students will be able to construct their own independent, inclusive environment, through art making; this increase in diversity education relates not only to the race and ethnicity of our students, it also includes religion, economic status, gender identity, language background, and more. Adopting inclusion and awareness around multicultural education and taking a culturally responsive approach to teaching is a benefit to both students and instructors. Not only does creating a better multicultural awareness and inclusive environment help students with different backgrounds and needs succeed, but it encourages acceptance and helps prepare students to thrive in a diverse world. - In this proposal for a National Service Learning Academy and complimentary Action Research Program, several curricula configurations are put forth. The first is a full-blown action research major that partially dictates the appropriate courses to take fulfilling the A&S core requirements and the majority of free electives. The second is a minor/certificate in action research. The third is an alternative set of core courses that would replace the credit hours traditionally reserved for the A&S core requirements, enabling any student to tack on the action research experience to their chosen major while still having credit hours available to pursue other minors, certificates, or electives. The fourth is an alternative core that is based more heavily on applied courses and knowledge.

- The current debates revolving around 5G, Huawei, and how they are resolved, are highly visible indicators of the technology based shifts in the global order which are setting the tone for the 21st century. Currently, it seems that many in the US and the PRC are using Cold War and Thucydides Trap paradigms, with a zero-sum mentality. At least in the case of 5G technology, the UK seems to have taken a more nuanced approach. This article comes as the UK prepares its new National Cyber Security Strategy, reviewing the 5G and cyber security debates surrounding Huawei in a highly interdisciplinary manner, and directing readers to a rich variety of resources. In addition to its analysis of issues and solutions often absent from the discourse, this article’s feature contribution is the argument that the UK can be more than an example of a middle way. Specifically, if the UK scales up and internationalizes its Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Center, perhaps by creating an International Cyber Security Evaluation Center, it can lead its allies and the world in 5G, 6G, cybersecurity, and international relations, filling a vital leadership vacuum.

- This is a preprint of a to be submitted paper that demonstrates that: (1) many important food allergens (eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts) induce the unfolded protein response (UPR) in intestinal epithelial cells; (2) induction of the UPR, in turn, stimulates the expression of pro-Th2 cytokines (IL-25, IL-33, TSLP) that are required for the induction of food allergy by these cytokines; (3) egg allergy is suppressed in mouse models by the UPR inhibitor, metformin (a drug widely used to treat diabetes mellitus); and (4) metformin appears to have a protective effects in humans who have alpha-gal syndrome, which is a form of food allergy.

- 1892 printing of 1892 copyrighted text. The author is credited as a Ph.D and as Professor in the School of Pedagogy, University of the City of New York. The introduction breaks the text down into punctuation, reproductions, inventions, short papers, letter-writing, and essay writing from outlines. Copying is recommended for exercises, the reproductions are to be rewritten from memory, the inventions take the form of interrupted stories. The chapters are punctuation, variety of expression, variety of sentence-form, paraphrase and abstract, essentials of sentence structure, figurative language, letter-writing, diction, essay-writing, common errors, and capitals. The appendices cover rules for punctuation, marks used in correcting compositions, additional material for compositions, and brief biographical notes. The Schultz Archive's copy is roughly the complete text.

- Abstract: Can a library support an overseas program with a full-time librarian position? Can this position provide distant services successfully through e-learning techniques, social media and other methods? The answer is yes. As many American universities enroll students through a shared or global campus, librarians can play a vital role as the primary information and library services provider. The University of Cincinnati (UC) and Chongqing University, China (CQU) established the first shared engineering programs in China with mandatory co-operative education, the Joint Co-op Institute (JCI), in 2013. Students primarily receive on-campus instruction in China from JCI instructors; however, no UC librarian is onsite to provide dedicated support. In response, UC Libraries developed the new Global Services Librarian position as the lead presence for support of the Libraries’ growing global engagement and partnerships, especially with the JCI. This Librarian provides a full range of services, mostly at a distance, including instruction, outreach, and faculty support. This presentation will describe the development of the Global Services Librarian position, its roles in supporting the JCI, lessons learned in the first year of this position, and how this role could be adapted for other library environments.

- As the opportunities and challenges raised by globalization become more a part of people’s everyday lives, colleges and universities are committed to providing their students with academic opportunities on a global scale. This has led academic libraries to focus their efforts on meeting the needs of their students and faculty at global campuses and study abroad sites. Also under the same trend, the number of global services/education librarians is on the rise with unique responsibilities and experiences. In this panel, we’ll be discussing: the similarities and differences between the global library services programs at our respective sites; the opportunities and challenges we’ve faced, including how to work with partners on main campus as well as overseas; discuss how global library services may be evolving in the future.

- As the opportunities afforded by globalization expand, colleges and universities are committed to providing students with academic opportunities on a global scale. This has led academic libraries to focus efforts on meeting the needs of students and faculty at global campuses and study abroad sites. In this panel, we’ll be discussing the similarities and differences between our global library services programs and the opportunities and challenges we’ve faced, with practical advice on working with partners on-campus and overseas. This will be an interactive session where the audience will work towards formulating and refining global initiatives based on institutional needs.

- If your organization is interested in establishing and developing a joint international program in China, it is inevitable to face both manageable risks and unpredictable changes. There are mainly three types of challenges. ● Political impact on travel and visa application: the 2017 re-election in China and leadership change in the United States affect how efficient for both sides to visit each other and stay for work. ● Technology restriction on teaching and communication: While the fast internet speed and open internet are taken for granted in the US, technological difficulties in China can be a barrier for effective teaching and communication. ● Censorship: In China, censorship is always a challenge, especially in the current state. Be proactive to work effectively within the constraints. The presenter is intended to share some experience and best practice based on a successful joint institute between University of Cincinnati and Chongqing University. As the first coop based program in China, the program continues to be a leading model in international engineering education.

- A tactile display apparatus renders information to a user, and comprises multiple braille cells attached adjacent to each other along a predefined path, a set of pins housed within the braille cells, and a set of pin holders inserted on the braille cells. The braille cells are moved periodically at a predefined speed via a driving assembly. The pins are selectively actuated by actuators, where the linear motion of the braille cells allow the user to contact the pins to read the information represented by the arrangement of the pins. The pin holders are moved along a defined path to contact the pins, and each pin holder comprises a rigid body and multiple elastic rings attached along the rigid body. The number of elastic rings is equal to the number of pins to allow the pin holder to selectively hold or release a pin.

- In this research, Industrial Artificial Intelligence (IAI) is discussed as the most promising technology for enabling and realization of the next industrial revolution. The key enablers for this transformative technology along with their significant advantages are discussed. In addition, this research explains “Lighthouse Factories” as an emerging status applying to the top manufacturers that have implemented IAI in their manufacturing ecosystem and gained significant financial benefits. - This document is a supplement to the University of Cincinnati's Power Session workshop presented at Data Day 2019 by Richard Johansen and Mark Chalmers. The goal of this document is to reproduce the step-by-step instructions of the Power Session which demonstrated how to create interactive maps of social vulnerability at the county level. Familiarity with GitHub, R and RStudio environments are highly recommended, but not required to follow this tutorial. For a more in-depth explanation as to how the data was retrieved, cleaned, and manipulated, please refer to the full R script called Mapping_Social_Vulnerability.R located in the Scripts folder of the GitHub repository.

- Dr. Deborah Duran is the director of NIMHD’s Office of Science Policy, Strategic Planning, Analysis, Reporting, and Data (OSPARD). She has 20 years of experience in organizational strategic planning, system assessments, science policy, measures, metrics, data management, performance monitoring, and reporting. Dr. Duran leads two branches within OSPARD: Science Planning, Policy, and Reporting; and Data, Assessments, Resources, and Evaluation. OSPARD serves NIMHD planning, assessment, analysis, and reporting needs and coordinates trans-NIH minority health and health disparities planning and reporting requirements. Dr. Duran hopes to help NIMHD become the centralized source of minority health and health disparities biomedical data, policies, and scientific advances. Dr. Duran has spent much of her NIH career serving as performance director in the NIH Office of the Director, handling a wide range of responsibilities, including program performance monitoring, budget performance integration, organization performance assessments, and strategic planning. She designed a centralized online reporting system, currently used by NIH and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to assist in the collection, analysis, and communication of organization performance information. Dr. Duran trained in social psychology and virus research, statistics, evaluation, counseling, and computer science. She has experience as an educator, principal investigator, advocate, researcher, consultant, and counselor. Her areas of interest include system science, population health, Hispanic health, behavior research, cancer, coping, end-of-life care, palliative care, data systems, data management, and training minority youth. Dr. Duran has a Ph.D. in social psychology with a minor in research methodologies and statistics. In 2000 and in 2004, Dr. Duran earned the HHS Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service.
