    This research analyzes the "syndemic" of mental stress and physical pain among 299 unregulated laborers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Results reveal that psychological distress increased the risk of physical injury by 28-fold, highlighting a critical link between economic instability and worker health. These findings offer urgent parallels to the U.S. "gig economy," where delivery and warehouse workers face similar occupational injustices without safety nets. The presentation moves beyond ergonomics to propose a Social Justice Framework, challenging attendees to advocate for ethical supply chains and for mental health protections for vulnerable workers, both globally and locally.

    The presenters of this poster have created a free, flexible, and reflective curriculum that provides library workers with the foundational knowledge and specialized skills necessary to conduct and publish rigorous original research in an effort toward diversifying and improving LIS literature and promoting lifelong learning. LibParlor Online Learning (LPOL) aims to revolutionize continuing education for librarians by offering a robust curriculum that addresses current gaps in librarian education regarding research skills and scholarly communication through a flexible and regularly updated curriculum. This poster will present the mission and vision of LPOL, showcase key resources, and explore possible paths through the curriculum.     The Librarian Parlor (aka LibParlor or #LibParlor) is an online space ( https://libparlor.com) for conversing, sharing expertise, and asking questions about the process of pursuing, developing, and publishing library research. LibParlor provides a community for new-to-research library workers as they consider a research agenda and provide support as they may face a number of challenges. LibParlor aims to address these challenges in part by collecting and showcasing honest reflections, conversations, and how-tos from library professionals engaged in library research. In providing this space, LibParlor aims to spark conversation and cultivate a community of researchers. This poster presents the mission and vision of LibParlor, how we got started, some of the work we’ve done, and plans for the future. We share what we have learned through the formation of an online community, including the importance of having established workflows, detailed editorial policies, and clear communication between members of the team as well as writers. This poster shares our lessons learned and takeaways for others wanting to start a new group. For example, early on we spent a considerable amount of time developing internal and external workflow documents. However, now our processes are documented and clear for contributors. We would also provide recommendations for getting buy-in from major stakeholders before starting a project like this.

    Over 400,000 quarries have been left abandoned and seemingly in a state of disrepair once their resources have been depleted or no longer valued. Before 1977, there were no laws or regulations in place to protect these sites. Owners and contractors were able to leave the site as is with tools, machinery, jagged rocks, slabs of cut stone, trash, and anything in between. This project explores the oldest marble quarry in the country, the Norcross-West marble quarry located in Dorset, Vermont. The design answers the question of how to repurpose this site by combining the site history to create educational opportunities, vegetation implementation to create habitats for at risk species, and sustainable practices such as marble carving and rainwater collection create a space that fulfills needs within the site that have long sense been forgotten. These practices reform the space and set a precedent for the dozens of other nearby abandoned and active quarry sites.

    If life is said to imitate art, then Suzanne Valadon’s rebellious, unorthodox, bohemian lifestyle is reflected in her artworks. Valadon's choice of the nude as the primary focus of much of her work reveals much about her role in society. A as a member of the working-class, Valadon was able to step outside the domestic and painted within the traditionally male domain. The art of Suzanne Valadon has been reprised in recent years as feminist art historians have been questioning the art historical canon and challenging the ideology of the nude as a masculine domain. This paper will discuss Valadon’s time as a model, what influence this had on her works, and her relationship with Edgar Degas, her family, and female contemporaries. It will also examine why Valadon chose the nude as the primary focus of much of her works and what this says about her role in society. Through this study, I hope to give better insight on why Valadon’s works were championed during her life, but the recognition faded after her death. Through her work, Valadon challenged not only the rules of the day, but she reclaimed the female nude in her work, the woman was no longer an object to be viewed but a subject in her own right.

  • Enzymatic Recycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate

    The goal of this project was to research and propose the implementation of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling plant. The recommended process is recycling PET flakes into its base polymers and monomers via a hydrolase enzyme biocatalyst. The current design with supporting utilities and operations has an estimated total capital investment of $54.68 million dollars. The team recommends selling terephthalic acid (rTPA) at $2.21 per kilogram to reach a net present value of $0 after 10 years. This price is not yet competitive with the current market of virgin TPA, which historically has been between $1.00 and $1.50 per kilogram. This process also produces liquid ethylene glycol (EG) and sodium sulfate salt (SS) that can be sold as co-products. The return on investment (ROI) is 24.4% and the venture profit is $1.34 million. Future work includes further optimization of rTPA pricing, on-site wastewater treatment, unit operation modification, and further lab development and research regarding the biocatalyst enzyme

    Wind power represents one of the most promising sources of renewable energy and improvements to wind turbine design and control can have a significant impact on energy sustainability. This proposal is about a new design for efficient VAWT. Typically, VAWT power output is generated from the difference between the forces on the forward and backward facing blades to the wind direction. That reduces their efficiency as compared to the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT). The current innovation, eliminates the forces on the backward facing blades using dynamic blades which improve their efficiency to be comparablewith the HAWT. In addition, the turbine is fitted with aerodynamic brakes that safely stop the turbine at low and high wind speeds. This safety feature does not exist in any Vertical Axis Wind Turbine in the market. The innovation received the Accelerator to Commercialization award in 2014 from the state of Ohio and University of Cincinnati. Several small size prototypes were builtwhich validated the concept. VAWTs are capable of catching wind from all directions which avoid the need for yaw mechanisms, rudders or downwind coning. The electric generators can be positioned near the ground and are easily accessible for maintenance. The new invention will revolutionize thewind turbines andwind farms technology by improving the VAWT efficiency and safety.

    Poster presented at the 2019 Special Libraries Association (SLA) annual conference. Abstract: In 2018, the University of Cincinnati Libraries’ Research & Data Services (RDS) unit unveiled a new Visualization Laboratory (Viz Lab) and expanded service model including data visualization/data analysis. The RDS unit has its roots in STEMM and currently includes informationists, librarians and technical consultants who engages with researchers across all disciplines. The Viz Lab and its associated services are the culmination of several years of planning and implementation. This poster will share lessons learned and good practices with our visualization space and service planning, including considerations for space design, service and training models, staffing and assessment. In addition, this poster will describe the early impact of our efforts, as seen through consultation logs, trainings and campus outreach, space usage and grants activity. We will also reveal some future directions for RDS, including plans to increase integration of the Viz Lab and data visualization/data analysis services into the university’s teaching and research missions.
