1. Views from the Window: Conveying Harmony Under Different Atmospheric Conditions in Camille Pissarro’s Boulevard Montmartre Series

Description/Abstract:: The only artist to be featured at all eight Impressionist Exhibitions in Paris was Camille Pissarro. The Impressionist movement emerged during a period of rapid social change and growing industrialization with more people moving to cities. In Pissarro’s works, he specifically concentrated on the conditions of different weather and times of day to alter how he painted scenes of a city. My paper focuses on the Boulevard Montmartre series and his use of building tonal relationships and skill of lighting placement across the fourteen paintings in order to establish a harmonious composition where the day’s essence radiates off the canvas.

2. Immersive Inclusion: Diversity and Inclusion Training Using Virtual Reality

Description/Abstract:: An exploration of the use of virtual reality technology in the context of diversity and inclusion training. This manuscript describes two studies: Study 1 was longitudinal and investigated the impacts of a VR-based bias training. Cognitive and affective empathy levels and impact on behavior, attitude, and knowledge before and after the training were measured to test the hypotheses that (H1) cognitive empathy levels would increase and (H2) individuals with higher initial levels of empathy would demonstrate more pronounced changes in cognitive empathy following the training. H1 was supported but larger changes were found in affective empathy levels. H2 was also supported as individuals with higher initial empathy levels showed higher levels of cognitive empathy after the training compared to individuals with lower initial empathy levels. However, again, larger differences were found in affective empathy levels. Qualitative data revealed a lasting impact nine weeks after the training that was not present in the quantitative data. Study 2 surveyed healthcare professionals who previously participated in a VR-based DEI training that focused on social determinants of health and empathy in healthcare professionals. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the longitudinal impacts of a VR-based DEI training by gathering qualitative data from the participants at least a year after they went through the training. The respondents reported a lasting influence from the training. Reasons for the discrepancy between the qualitative and quantitative results are discussed as are implications for organizations and future DEI training development and research.

3. Wireless Sensor Monitoring Water Use at Fixtures

Description/Abstract:: The Dataset contains raw data that indicates the start and stop time of water flowing at fixtures in the Marian Spencer Hall Cafeteria restroom during hours of operation. The data were collected as part of an effort to develop and test a novel method of measuring flow to calculate the probability that the fixture is busy (fixture p-value). The fixture p-value is one of the parameters necessary to predict peak demand in buildings for pipe sizing purposes. There are two .csv files, a README file and a sample of the data collection template with contact information. The dataset also contains a MATLAB code written to accept data in the suggested format and estimate the fixture probability of use.

22. Tecumseh Biography

Description/Abstract:: This is a biography of the Shawnee tribal chief Tecumseh. The early childhood of Tecumseh is researched all the way to his death at the Battle of Thames in 1813 in this biography that sticks to the truth and cites sources from different authors. Originally this research project was just a capstone project for a class but as the research accumulated, I found the need to create this biography about Tecumseh. Tecumseh made a confederation of like-minded tribes to combat the encroaching United States' government in the late 18th century and early 19th century. All the information that is presented in the biography has been researched and edited. With more than 50 hours of research involved with this biography, the historical contributions regarding The War of 1812 are noteworthy and the contributions made regarding the killer of Tecumseh are found in this biography as well. This isn't a complete overview of Tecumseh's life, but rather this biography details the life of a Shawnee in a time rich with civil strife during the expansion of the United States after the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. The Heritage Village Musuem in Sharonville, Ohio allowed for me to intern during the summer of 2022 to bolster the accuracy of this biography.

Description/Abstract:: Draft of capstone class final project. Includes file of images and wall labels for DRAFT of the exhibition. Includes prints from the UC art collection from the 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The representation of architecture within art is a main theme for artists of all time periods. Within the UC Art Collection, prints display different stylistic approaches from abstract to realistic when portraying architecture. This exhibit will display five prints that compare and contrast the idea of stylistic approach. By viewing these artworks, there is the question as to why artists chose to portray the two types differently. Does the style dictate the importance or function of the architecture? Through exploration, one could say that there is a correlation between the type of architecture and its stylistic rendering. When viewing the examples of the collection, architecture that is considered monumental, such as cathedrals or government buildings, seem to be portrayed with realistic detailing and perspective, leaving no room for artistic expression in the portrayal. On the other hand, common architecture is portrayed with more abstraction but allows more freedom of expression from the artist to interpret the structure. Is one better than the other or do these two separate approaches give their subjects individualized attention to their charms?

Description/Abstract:: This essay investigates the complex subject matter and the significance of Félix Bracquemond’s etching Le Haut d’un battant de porte (The Top of a Door) through a biographical approach, visual analysis, and examination of the artist’s creative process and intentions. The investigation demonstrates that this etching is not only unusual for its clarity, but also for its ambiguity. The seemingly contradictory yet complementary characteristics – clarity and ambiguity – coexist in this work. It is the coexistence and interaction of clarity and ambiguity that makes this work more significant and intriguing.

Description/Abstract:: This paper explores the question of why it is important to apply culturally responsive teaching within the classroom, through creativity. Teaching diversity exposes students to a variety of cultural and social groups. This educational experience prepares students to become better citizens, within their communities. Through the creative process, students will examine topics which, both, encompass and promote diversity. Additionally, students will be able to construct their own independent, inclusive environment, through art making; this increase in diversity education relates not only to the race and ethnicity of our students, it also includes religion, economic status, gender identity, language background, and more. Adopting inclusion and awareness around multicultural education and taking a culturally responsive approach to teaching is a benefit to both students and instructors. Not only does creating a better multicultural awareness and inclusive environment help students with different backgrounds and needs succeed, but it encourages acceptance and helps prepare students to thrive in a diverse world. Description/Abstract:: Classifier algorithms use the features (collectively known as Feature Vectors) of each item in a dataset to assess the classification to which that item belongs. In this classifier approach, each item represents one document containing the application essay combined with unstructured language describing relevant activities of a single applicant. For privacy, the full text of this document is not provided. Instead, each document is represented only by its features. The feature vector for this classifier is based on the term frequency for each of the identified terms. E.G. Doc_A contains 0 occurrences of any terms identified as family medicine vocabulary, and 10 occurrences of terms from the the non-family-medicine vocabulary.

78. Vocabulary Comparison of Medical School Applications

Description/Abstract:: W2V takes terms from a large corpus of text and models them onto a vector space, based on word associations from your dataset. These Word Associations take into account each word's immediate context (its ten neighboring words). Following the data modeling (large-scale unstructured text), The platform then generates a visualization of this vector space, which lets us perform analysis e.g. detect synonymous/synonym-ish words and highlight related words. At the heart of this project, is W2V's ability to identify key words that were more frequent - and more unique - to each group using results from 2 different W2V models – one for each group's application texts. We coded these Key Terms into categories, then analyzed those categories for overarching themes.

81. Topic Model Results of Ohio Non-Profit Organizations' Mission Language

Description/Abstract:: This CSV file contains the topic distribution of each EIN as uncovered using six parallel Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) Topic Models. Each row depicts a topic and topic-score associated with an Ohio NPO (identified by Employer Identification Number) generated from one model run. The sum of topic scores possible for every row associated with an EIN therefore will not exceed 6.0 (6 models x 100%) Topic scores below .01 (1%) are not included. Each topic from the models is further identified as Essential/Non-Essential by subject matter expert, Dr. Michael Jones, guided by the official IRS definition. The topic models are generated on unstructured text language from the mission statement and activities language taken from the 2019 tax forms of Ohio non-profit organizations.

I had an intuitive feeling that architecture is more than a visual aesthetic, rather a holistic social experience. The everyday objects with which we interact are an integral part of our social disposition and social wellbeing. Description/Abstract:: This dataset contains quantitative and qualitative data about the archaeological remains of fish-salting and fulling workshops throughout the ancient Mediterranean world (Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia), primarily dating to the Roman period. The data provided the basis for the two case studies in the author's dissertation (Motz, C.F. 2021. "The Knowledge Networks of Workshop Construction in the Roman World." Ph.D. diss., University of Cincinnati). The tables contained in this dataset were exported from the author's FileMaker database. Detailed information about the structure and contents of this dataset may be obtained by consulting Chapter 2 of the author's dissertation.

Description/Abstract:: In this proposal for a National Service Learning Academy and complimentary Action Research Program, several curricula configurations are put forth. The first is a full-blown action research major that partially dictates the appropriate courses to take fulfilling the A&S core requirements and the majority of free electives. The second is a minor/certificate in action research. The third is an alternative set of core courses that would replace the credit hours traditionally reserved for the A&S core requirements, enabling any student to tack on the action research experience to their chosen major while still having credit hours available to pursue other minors, certificates, or electives. The fourth is an alternative core that is based more heavily on applied courses and knowledge.

Session Description: Publishing Data In Repositories - August 10th from 2-3pm The currency of academia has long been the article. However, with supplemental materials in so many formats, the nature of the scholarly output has changed dramatically. Additionally funders and journals are requiring that the evidence for the articles is also available. Repositories are an excellent venue for these additional forms of scholarly, particular the data. In this session, attendees will learn about the nature of changing publication outputs, how repositories can help provide the needed infrastructure to share data and other research outputs, and how to make a bigger impact with your scholarship through publishing in a repository.

It occurred on July 27, 2020, at 2:00 pm EDT. Due to technical difficulties, the presentation starts at 8:47. The presenter was Claudio Aspesi, Senior Research Analyst. He joined Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., LLC, in 2004 covering European media stocks. Previously he was Global Senior Vice President of Strategy at EMI Music and was responsible for defining the company’s business model as the music industry entered the digital age. Before joining EMI Music in 2002, Mr. Aspesi was a member of the executive team at Airclic, an Internet infrastructure company, and prior to that a Principal at McKinsey and Co., working with many leading media and entertainment companies. Mr. Aspesi graduated with the highest honors from Universita Luigi Bocconi, Milan, with a Laurea in Economia Aziendale. Session Description - Open data and metadata - opportunities, risks, and possible actions Research data is at the core of what universities do. Its value to researchers is, of course, paramount - and open science offers significant benefits to the scientific community. But this data, and the attached metadata, are increasingly valuable for third parties as well. We will discuss how research data and metadata increasingly overlaps with all the other data produced by academic institutions, how it is becoming increasingly valuable outside the academic community, and how it could become even more valuable in the future. The collection, analysis, synthesis and preservation of data and metadata, however, pose significant issues as well; for example, data can and is being used to evaluate individuals (with the biases implicit in developing algorithms to analyze them). More broadly, the collection and analysis of data raises privacy and academic freedom concerns, and so does the lack of transparency and accountability of third party users. Ultimately, the deployment of data analytics and Artificial Intelligence tools should fit with the broader values of the academic community, such as equity and sustainability - whether it does so is controversial. In addition to the need to establish principles for the use of data analytics and Artificial Intelligence, there are also significant ethical questions that need to be addressed, and that pose significant challenges, and there are questions about how to ensure the long term preservation of data and metadata. We will close the presentation with a look at possible steps that the academic community ought to take to address all these issues. We hope that a discussion will follow, in order to address questions and issues, as well as to gather points of view from participants
