In the spring of 2001 the hilly uplands immediately northwest of the modern city of Durres were for the first time investigated using the techniques of intensive surface survey. In total, an area of six square kilometers was explored and twenty-nine sites were defined, most of them new. Remains of Greek antiquity were plentiful and include unpublished inscriptions and graves. One site may be the location of a previously unknown Archaic temple. Included in this article are descriptions of the areas investigated, a list of sites, and a catalogue of the most diagnostic artifacts recovered. Patterns of settlement and land use are discussed and compared to those recorded by other surveys in Albania.
The University of Cincinnati Health Sciences Library (HSL) surveyed all first-year medical students about electronic books (eBooks) purchased for the first-year curriculum and conducted a usage analysis. The HSL wanted to determine the extent to which students use eBook versions if required for the curriculum or if they continue to use print versions, and to analyze eBook usability, ease of use, and overall student satisfaction.
Join Kristen Burgess, Sean Crowe, and Carolyn Hansen for a discussion of new trends in name authority control and researcher identity management. Our session will cover the evolution of name authority control programs such as LoC NACO, efforts to merge and disambiguate disparate national name authorities (ISNI), as well as the nascent ORCID program to track and manage researchers.
After a short presentation, we hope to have an open discussion of these topics and what they mean for UC Libraries.
Carolyn Hansen, Metadata Librarian, and her colleague Sean Crowe, Electronic Resources Librarian at University of Cincinnati Libraries, will describe their experiences of transitioning from cataloging to metadata, which is a common occurrence for catalogers these days. As materials and projects are brought online as well as born digital, traditional cataloging sometimes does not suffice the needs of these types of collections. Their presentation is titled "From Cataloging to Metadata: Difference in Scope, Skills, and Standards" and will focus on UC's conversion of over 9,000 Dublin Core records to the VRA standard, illustrating the differences between traditional cataloging and metadata projects with technical details at the forefront. Lloyd C. Engelbrecht (born 1927) is Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Cincinnati. His article, “Wood, Plywood and Veneer, Cranbrook, the New Bauhaus and the W. P. A.: the Origins of the Eames Chair of 1946,” had its origins in a paper presented at a symposium, “Bauhaus, New Bauhaus, W. P. A.: Chairs for Mid-Century,” October 17, 1981, at the Mid-America Conference of the College Art Association, meeting in Milwaukee. The article was expanded and eventually completed in 1987, but it was never published. The author asked that his late wife, June-Marie F. Engelbrecht (1930-2009), be given credit for her immense amount of help with the research and writing of the article.
Lloyd C. Engelbrecht (born 1927) is Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Cincinnati. This study guide was used to illustrate some of his classroom presentations and also on-site visits with his students to Prairie School buildings. This version of the study guide dates from May 10, 1994.
The purpose of this study was to define and examine the IASB’s
governance network. The IASB’s governance network was bound to include 14
organisational members and 407 individual actors. I used social network
methodology to examine the professional and geographic perspectives
represented as well as the extent to which the governance network was
structurally embedded. It was found that the network forms a definable
hierarchy that exhibits qualities of structural embeddedness. Banking interests
were more embedded within the governance network than any other
professional, academic, or social group. Also, a strong Western influence was
detected. The societal benefit of this effort was to engage society in general and
accounting researchers in particular in hopes of encouraging discourse about
regulatory processes with both macro and micro consequences.

Paper Submitted to ARN Envisioning the Future as Critical Partners in Data-Driven Science Workshop
What initially looked like several change agents colliding to create a year of turbulence, came to be a year of transformation for our teaching practice. Both external forces, such as ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, and internal forces, such as new strategic directions in eLearning, provided momentum as we redesigned our research guides. The presentation includes a case study of a year-long process of re-envisioning our guides to enhance content based on the Framework’s threshold concepts, incorporate responsive and accessible design, and reflect our pedagogical practices. Throughout the process we collaborated with key campus stakeholders: eLearning strategists, English Composition faculty, and the student population. In addition, our process coincided with the renovation of one of our classrooms into a collaborative teaching and learning environment. The presentation demonstrates how the new space converged with our instruction strategies.
The Middle Proterozoic Jacobsville Sandstone, located on the upper peninsula, Michigan, is the youngest rift- related sedimentary unit in the 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift. Although outcrops of the Jacobsville Sandstone along the Lake Superior shoreline and in river gorges are well studied, these outcrops represent stratigraphically only the upper 300-400 feet of the estimated 9,000 feet thick Jacobsville Sandstone. I used drill cores and newly-studied outcrop samples; 1) to characterize stratigraphically continuous sections; 2) to compare the Jacobsville Sandstone in subsurface with the Jacobsville Sandstone in outcrop; 3) to identify lateral and vertical variations in texture and petrographic composition within the Jacobsville Sandstone; and 4) to determine petrographic provenance of the Jacobsville Sandstone.

Meredith Davis has taught for forty-seven years and served as head of the Department of Graphic Design, Director of Graduate Programs in Graphic Design, and Director of the PhD Design program at NC State University. She is an AIGA fellow and national medalist, Alexander Quarles Holladay Medalist for Teaching Excellence, and fellow and former member of the accreditation commission of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, for which she drafted the national standards for the evaluation of college-level design programs. She serves as a member of the education advisory committee of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Museum and is a former president of the American Center for Design. Meredith is a frequent author–including four books on design and design education– and serves on the editorial boards of She Ji and Design Issues. Her research includes a two-year study of design-based teaching and learning for the National Endowment for the Arts, which received a CHOICE award from the National Association of College and Research Libraries.
She has served on the development teams for two National Assessments of Educational Progress, most recently for the scenario-based evaluation of 21,500 students in Technology and Engineering Design Literacy. She authored a five-year research study of teaching critical and creative thinking across the college curriculum, featured in a study by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development on the effectiveness of higher education in preparing students for innovation jobs. She has reviewed proposals for the Smithsonian Office of Education and Museum Studies, National Science Foundation, US Department of Education, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and her work has been funded by the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Science and Technology; National Endowment for the Arts; Worldesign Foundation; and several state commissions.

In societies where productivity is prioritized over presence, anxiety abounds. The extensive and alarming effects of anxiety on the mental and physiological wellbeing of bachelor students inspired a cross-disciplinary team to tackle this problem. Using combined expertise in visual design, music technology, psychology, art therapy and mindfulness — a digital tool entitled “Modes” was born. The Modes digital tool is an atmospheric, introspective, and aesthetically sophisticated engagement of three senses: ophthalmoception (sight), audioception (hearing), and tactioception (touch). Through immersive interaction, mesmerizing visual and sound landscapes are generated in order to reduce anxiety in bachelor students. The two measurable outcomes of Modes are 1) the reduction of self-reported anxiety in bachelor students, and 2) the reduction of bachelor student heart rates.
Interacting with the Modes digital tool is like playing in a sandbox of dynamic visuals and music. Users begin by selecting and entering one of three digital environments entitled Refocus, Chill, or Energize. Each environment (or mode) offers a unique set of visuals and music designed specifically for anxiety reduction. The design and functionality of Modes are rooted in tenets of mindfulness practice and Ayurveda — an ancient Indian healing system emphasizing inner balance as a method for maintaining health and wellness (Kiefer, 2016). The Refocus, Chill, and Energize modes aim to balance each of three governing principle of Ayurveda that regulate physiological activity. Ultimately, users may combat and control their anxiety in three targeted ways: by refocusing, chilling, or energizing.

Don Norman is Director of the Design Lab at the University of California, San Diego. He is co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, former Vice President of Apple and former executive at Hewlett Packard. Norman serves as an IDEO Fellow, an honorary professor of Design and Innovation at Tongji University (Shanghai), and is an advisor or board member of numerous companies.
At UC, San Diego, he served as chair of the Psychology Department and founder and chair of the Cognitive Science Department. At Northwestern University, he is the Breed Professor of Design, emeritus. He has been Distinguished Visiting Professor of Industrial Design at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He has honorary degrees in psychology from the University of Padua (Italy) and in Design from the Technical University of Delft (the Netherlands) and the University of the Republic of San Marino. He received a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from SIGCHI and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer & Cognitive Science from the Franklin Institute (Philadelphia).
He is a member of the American National Academy of Engineering, and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Association for Computing Machinery, American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, Human Factors & Ergonomics Society, and the Design Research Society. He serves on the Board of Trustees at IIT's Institute of Design in Chicago.
He is well known for his books "The Design of Everyday Things," "Emotional Design," and "Living with Complexity." He lives at www.jnd.org.

Tracy Moss is an independent design consultant and currently serves as the Course Director for Counter-Proliferation Opportunity Design at Joint Special Operations University, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. As co-founder of the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Design Thinking education program, she also serves as core faculty for the full complement of design-related courses and activities at the university and headquarters.
Ms. Moss retired from military service in 2015 having spent 20 years on active duty in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. During her final four years of military service at USSOCOM, she served as the lead Analyst and Planner on two operational design teams and as Chief of Counter-Weapons of Mass Destruction Analysis.
Enriched concentrations of vanadium and nickel have been noted in a variety of naturally occurring organic substances including crude oils, asphalts, and organic matter in some sedimentary rocks. The objectives of this study are to understand the preference, source and proportionality of these.
Detailed mineralogic and chemical analyses of well cuttings of Tertiary sediments from two wells, Uruan-1 and Uda-1, on the eastern flank of the Niger delta, have been made in an attempt to investigate clay mineral burial diagenesis.
Cambrian sedimentation of the Rome trough in eastern Kentucky was studied using 85 wells supplemented by available cuttings and cores. Most conclusions are based on cross sections, isopach and structure maps, and the environmental interpretation of geophysical logs. Thin section petrology played a supplementary role.
Mapping of the Wayaro quadrangle (680 sq kms; scale 1:50,000) revealed that the Bela Ophiolites were thrust upon a sedimentary melange (Kanar Melange) which was deposited in the Paleocene on the Sembar Formation of Cretaceous age.
The principal objective of this study was to develop a battery of methodologies for the analysis of texture, grain packing and pore geometry in sands and sandstones. The methodologies developed include: (1) the 'roller micrometer', a machine which sizes grains by their smallest dimension, S; (2) plots of the joint I:S size and S/I form distributions (I is the intermediate grain dimension determined by sieving); (3) a sorting comparator for the visual estimation of sorting in thin sections; (4) 'packing efficiency', the ratio of minimum compactional to depositional porosity; (5) 'floating index', the proportion of grains lacking intergranular contacts; (6) correction of measurement errors in standard thin section packing analyses; (7) transformation, via digitization, of plain sections of samples into matrices of binary (rock vs pore) numbers; and (8) computer processing of the rock-pore matrices using the Fortran IV program PORESTAT which measures numerous parameters including porosity, specific pore surface area, pore size distribution, pore tortuosity, pore orientation, and periodic repetitions in the pore pattern.
It is recognized that the ecology of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages provides information about the chemical and physical properties of the water in which they live. Their areal and vertical distributions in the water column and in deep-sea sediments may be used to derive oceanographic and climatic models of Recent and past oceans.
The taxonomy, phylogeny, biostratigraphy, functional morphology, and paleoecology of Middle and Upper Ordovician (Blackriveran-Richmondian) Monoplacophora and bellerophontacean Gastropoda of the Cincinnati Arch region are discussed. Six genera and 29 species of monoplacophorans, and 13 genera and 56 species of bellerophontaceans are evaluated. The study is centered around new U.S. Geological Survey silicified collections.
I solve boundary-value problems for an idealized thrust block moving over a detachment surface and ramp, and produce theoretical bed-duplication folds in the thrust block that closely resemble the Powell Valley anticline in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The anticline is narrow and rounded if the translation is small, and broad and flat-topped if the translation is large. The limbs of the anticline are symmetric if drag is zero. Drag along the ramp part of the detachment surface can explain the asymmetry of dips of the two limbs of the Powell Valley anticline, particularly if drag between relatively competent rocks in opposition at the ramp causes an initial anticline to form as the thrust block begins to move, and then drag reduces markedly as relatively soft shales at the base of the block were thrust over competent rocks in the ramp.
A 3rd order theory of folding of viscous multilayers indicates that forms of folds are controlled by the behavior of layer contacts or interbeds, the relative stiffnesses of the multilayer and confining media, and the scale of the folding. A 2nd order analysis shows that asymmetry of folds is determined largely by the behavior of layer contacts and the sense of layer-parallel shear during folding.
The present work is a stratigraphic, reservoir, and environmental analysis of the Itarare Group (Permo-Carboniferous) using the well data of the Parana Basin which covers about 1,000,000 Km$\sp{2}$ in Brazil alone. More than three thousand kilometers of cross sections were analysed, over 100 wells were studied, nearly 400 meters of cores were described, and 95 thin sections were analysed.
"The Molango manganese deposit is the only known large Mn deposit in North America. Mineralization involves Mn-carbonate exclusively in a finely laminated bed about 10 meters thick with a strike length $>$50 kilometers. The ore bed is the basal unit of the Chipoco facies (Taman Fm., Kimmeridgian) and underlain by laminated black shales of the Santiago formation (Oxfordian)."
Roots of white ash have a better configuration than roots of sugar maple for anchoring shallow colluvium against landsliding on hillslopes along the Ohio River and its tributaries in southwestern Ohio. The landslides are in a shallow layer of colluvium, about one meter thick, overlying shale and limestone bedrock. The sliding hillsides range in slope angle from 16 to 36 degrees and the roots which penetrate shear surfaces are anchored in the weathered bedrock and help to hold landmasses in place. The hillsides are covered by a mesophytic forest, locally known as a ravine community, dominated by white ash, sugar maple and sweet buckeye. Sugar maple is the most common species on the landslides; its roots do not penetrate the soil as deeply as the roots of the white ash.
A stratigraphic and paleontological analysis of 303 samples of Paleocene sediments of the eastern Gulf Coastal Plain of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia provided the basis for a geochronologic, quantitative paleoecologic, and paleoceanographic model.
Slaty cleavage exposed in the fine-grained metasediments of western Ocoee Gorge, Tennessee is characterized by zones enriched in cleavage-parrallel white mica (P domains), alternating with zones enriched in quartz and feldspar and in which phyllosilicates are bedding-parallel (Q domains). This domainal fabric appears to develop by growth of new mica from mica components carried in a moving fluid. Solid state recrystallization of clays and mica may also have contributed to the development of the fabric, but little, if any, mechanical rotation or passive concentration of mica grains occurred. Both P domain morphology and mineralogical differences between P and Q domain phyllosilicate populations suggest that nucleation and growth of P domains may involve the expulsion of fluids, during diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism.
The Aspen Grove landslide, central Utah, occurred in older landslide debris. The debris is about 6-15 meters thick, and consists of medium- to high-plasticity clays and silty clays. Persistent landslide structures, including toes, hollows, and flank ridges, outline dimly preserved landslide masses in the older debris.
In east-central Utah, tide-, wind-, and wave-currents deposited the Middle Jurassic (Callovian) Curtis and Summerville Formations and the Moab Member of the Entrada Sandstone along the southern and eastern coastal plain of an interior seaway. Four facies of the Curtis were deposited during maximum transgression and incipient regression. Interbedded, heterogeneous litharenite and sublitharenite microsequences in the sandstone-mudstone facies record the initial transgression and development of sedimentation on a nearshore shelf. Sand and mud were intermittently transported by tidal- and wave-currents at near wavebase depths. The composite sandstone facies contains amalgamated, crossbedded and parallel-bedded subarkosic microsequences which were deposited during late transgression, stillstand and incipient regression in a tidal channel, sand-shoal, berm system. Sand, silt and mud were transported in the form of ripples, sand waves and dunes in tidal channels controlled by spring and neap tidal current. At shallower intertidal depths, interchannel sand shoals and berms were constructed by plane- and cross-laminated strata. Contemporary crosslaminated and locally crossbedded sublitharenites in the rippled silty facies and the redbed facies were deposited by spring-tide and wind- or storm-enhanced tidal currents in higher intertidal and supratidal zones respectively.
A unified study of outcrop and subsurface Silurian rocks from the Brassfield Formation through the C unit in adjacent portions of Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia enhances our understanding of regional stratigraphy, paleogeography, and sea level variations.
