viDEO saVant Presents Lateral Thinking at Autumedia (Performance Documentation)

Description/Abstract:: I was commissioned by Andy Marko of Semantics Gallery in Cincinnati to create a live show as the concluding event for his annual Autumedia Festival. The space at Semantics was filled with other work in the show, so he approached Third Party, another artist run space down the street, to host the performance. I sent a general call out to friends at CCM looking for improvising musicians with the idea of forming a fairly large ensemble. I had a a number of responses and the musical group was ultimately made up of Regan Brown (Bass Clarinet), Dave McDonnell (Sax and Electronics), Carrie Magin (Percussion), Steve Weimer (Keyboard), and Zach Larabee (Drums). I also invited Loraine Wible, former student and previous collaborator, with Discerning Crane, to contribute a second stream of images. When we got to the space I decided to throw Loraine's images obliquely across the long wall with mine in the center.

Defining the IASB’s governance network: a social network analysis

Description/Abstract:: The purpose of this study was to define and examine the IASB’s governance network. The IASB’s governance network was bound to include 14 organisational members and 407 individual actors. I used social network methodology to examine the professional and geographic perspectives represented as well as the extent to which the governance network was structurally embedded. It was found that the network forms a definable hierarchy that exhibits qualities of structural embeddedness. Banking interests were more embedded within the governance network than any other professional, academic, or social group. Also, a strong Western influence was detected. The societal benefit of this effort was to engage society in general and accounting researchers in particular in hopes of encouraging discourse about regulatory processes with both macro and micro consequences.

Description/Abstract:: Collaboration with Poet/Performer Enrique Aviles. This video has its origins as a part of the “video set” for a performance by Aviles, directed by Davis Chung. In the theatrical piece Aviles played the roles of two immigrants to the US (one Mexican and one Korean) who live on opposite sides of a rooming house in the Adams Morgan neighborhood in DC. Subsequently, Aviles and I decided to create a stand alone video using one of his poems. The original footage of the neighborhood was supplemented with images of graffiti he produced and a shot of him reciting the poem in the backyard of his house in Arlington, VA.

American Diorama Installed at El Camino Medical Center

Description/Abstract:: My first multi channel work for synchronized video streams. The piece starts in Cape Cod and moves gradually across the North American continent, ending at the Pacific Ocean. There is no attempt to cover all this of ground in any compete way - the work is an assembly of the places I traveled to and landscapes I admired during the four-year period in which I collected the material. All the scenes were shot with a single camera, then staggered in editing to create the appearance of a continuous shot. During filming I would pan, pause, and then move again, resulting in a series of staggered movements in which the different screens appear to drift in and out of synchronization. Installed at El Camino Medical Center in Mountain View, California.

Mood regulation experiment data

Description/Abstract:: The data contained herein address the following questions. The following is, in part, the statement of purpose from the IRB protocol approved for the following study. The decision to act as illustrated by the statement "I don't feel like doing this right now" may be one of the most frequent and basic kinds of decisions made. Consciously accessible feels or moods may play an integral role in the maintenance of physical well-being by leading to instrumental action which reduces extremes in physiological response. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the relation between mood regulation traits and actual self report mood during an experimental task wherein the participant is repeatedly asked to choose the difficulty of a math task, followed by administration of a mood scale. The method is more fully described in Hovanitz, C. A., Hursh, A. H., & Hudepohl, A. D. (2011). Dimensions of affect modulated by perceived mood regulation ability. Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. 36:113-119. Additional questionnaire, not yet analyzed and published, are present in this data set.

Correspondence between Martin Buber, Hans Kohn, Abraham Joshua Heschel and Adolph Oko, 1939-44

Description/Abstract:: Martin Buber is one of the luminaries of modern Jewish thought, and yet prior to 1944 his work was little known in the Anglophone world as few of his books had been translated into English. In 1933, Buber asked Adolph Oko, the Librarian of the Hebrew Union College (H.U.C.) in Cincinnati, Ohio to help him find a publishers for his work. The correspondence about securing a publisher between Buber and Oko eventually expanded to include the theologian Abraham Joshua Heschel (then teaching at H.U.C.) and the historian Hans Kohn, a former student of Buber who was now a refugee teaching in the U.S.

Between the Diaspora and Zion: Cecil Roth and his American friends

Description/Abstract:: Throughout much of his career the Anglo-Jewish historian Cecil Roth visited the U.S. and lectured to American Jewish students. Indeed, his first academic appointment was as a visiting professor at the Jewish Institute in Religion in New York City, and he was a regular teacher at the summer institutes of the Intercollegiate Menorah Society. Yet, he only wrote one short article (in 1963) that focused exclusively on American Jewish history, which was commissioned by Jacob Rader Marcus, the “Dean of American Jewish Historians.” An examination of Roth’s correspondence over a thirty plus year period reveals that his discussions of the nature and purpose of Jewish history was largely shaped by his relationship with American Jewry.

Tunisian Victory and Anglo-American Film Propaganda in World War II

Description/Abstract:: After the liberation of North Africa, in 1943, it was discovered by policy makers within the Grand Alliance that both the British and Americans were in the process of making documentary films about the Operation Torch campaign. Fearful that separate films would highlight potential dissension with the Anglo-American alliance, the director Frank Capra was dispatched to London to coordinate his U.S. Army documentary with his British counter-parts. Instead of a smooth process, the joint film project bogged down in inter-service and inter-allied rivalry’s that delayed the completion of Tunisian Victory for over a year.

Creating "Jewish History for Our Own Needs:" The Evolution of Cecil Roth's Historical Vision,1925-1935

Description/Abstract:: Remembered today as one of the great popularizers of Jewish history, in the inter-war year the Anglo-Jewish historian Cecil Roth was unable to secure an academic appointment until 1939. As such he turned to writing popular history as a means of support, and while some academic historians discounted his work (then and now), an examination of Roth’s correspondence with individuals such Henry Hurwitz of the Intercollegiate Menorah Society, reveal that Roth worked assiduously to develop an approach to history that would be both academically sound and “useful” to those readers who wanted to understand the contours of Jewish life.

The True Glory and the Failure of Anglo-American Film Propaganda in the Second World War

Description/Abstract:: In an effort to promote an image of Allied unity on the eve of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Western Europe, a Joint Anglo-American Film Commission was established with the goal of making a series of short documentaries on the liberation of the continent. Unfortunately, despite the prior planning, the plans for a series of joint films fell victim to competing ideologies about how to showcase the allied campaign. In an effort to salvage the situation the American film maker George Stevens was brought in to make a single long documentary, highlighting the campaign from D-Day to VE-Day. The resulting film, The True Glory, won an Oscar for best documentary of 1945, but in fact was the result of a failure of Allied film propaganda policy.

Connecting with American Faculty and Chinese Students Overseas: Repositioning the Library’s Role in the Digital Age

Description/Abstract:: As an increasing number of universities expand programs globally, libraries are seen as an essential partner for this endeavor. Some library units are fully or semi-fully integrated into these academic programs. The University of Cincinnati (Ohio, USA) and Chongqing University (Chongqing, China) introduced the first co-operative engineering education program in China in 2013. Since this time, the University of Cincinnati library has been striving to connect American faculty and Chinese students in three main areas: 1.utilizing library websites and social media for reference, instruction, and outreach; 2.playing a peer role for traveling faculty with course materials, elearning, and basic technical support; 3.developing a sustainable relationship with matching librarians in Chongqing for collection development and beyond. This presentation is intended to share experience and practices with librarians in similar positions, as well as administrators looking to develop a similar position.

Bayesian Approach to Selecting Hyperelastic Constitutive Models of Soft Tissue

Description/Abstract:: Hyperelastic constitutive models of soft tissue mechanical behavior are extensively used in applications like computer-aided surgery, injury modeling, etc. While numerous constitutive models have been proposed in the literature, an objective method is needed to select a parsimonious model that represents the experimental data well and has good predictive capability. This is an important problem given the large variability in the data inherent to soft tissue mechanical testing. In this work, we discuss a Bayesian approach to this problem based on Bayes factors. We propose a holistic framework for model selection, wherein we consider four different factors to reliably choose a parsimonious model from the candidate set of models. These are the qualitative fit of the model to the experimental data, evidence values, maximum likelihood values, and the landscape of the likelihood function. We consider three hyperelastic constitutive models that are widely used in soft tissue mechanics: Mooney-Rivlin, Ogden and exponential. Three sets of mechanical testing data from the literature for agarose hydrogel, bovine liver tissue, porcine brain tissue are used to calculate the model selection statistics. A nested sampling approach is used to evaluate the evidence integrals. In our results, we highlight the robustness of the proposed Bayesian approach to model selection compared to the likelihood ratio, and discuss the use of the four factors to draw a complete picture of the model selection problem.

Across Nations: Students Leading Cross-Cultural Understanding

Description/Abstract:: Panel presentation at the 2014 UC's Diversity Conference:Join a panel of students and librarians who will showcase their collaborative events focused on exploring cultures through personal experiences and library resources. The most recent event, Across Nations: Diversity Speaks, was a big success thanks to student engagement at all stages of planning and presentation. International and study abroad students planned, publicized and moderated the event. Student contributions ranged from social media publicity to the icebreaker – a culture shock video - to preparing ethnic foods and wearing traditional clothing. Most importantly, the inclusive and open dialog at the event allowed students to share their perceptions of other countries, including misconceptions that were corrected by students from those countries. The event serves as a model for utilizing student expertise and enthusiasm for enhancing cross cultural understanding and global engagement.

Focused Surveys: Building Blocks of Sustainable Assessment

Description/Abstract:: In its recent strategic planning effort, the University of Cincinnati Libraries (UCL) identified assessment as one of five strategic directions. The overall goal is to “ensure library user input into decision making about collections, services, and facilities.” While UCL has participated in LibQUAL+ regularly since 2002, and conducted other studies, UCL’s Transforming the UC Library User Experience, Strategic Plan 2011-2014, places increased focus and importance on gathering information and data from and about our users to inform decisions. The presenters will share their experience developing an assessment plan for UCL and initial efforts in building a culture of assessment. The design, methodology and approach of two focused surveys, that are a part of our coordinated plan of assessment, will be shared.

Fun, Food, and Library Finds: Reimagining Our Library and Ourselves with Student Engagement

The series marketed with the tag line, fun, food and library finds, included themes of Survivor, Library Edition, Celebrate the Chinese New Year, and The Secret World of Rare Books. The series was highly successful, providing direction for the current year.

The Rite of Passage: From Information Grazers to Evidence Based Researchers

Description/Abstract:: Using the university-wide common reading book, Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do?, we jump start the research process with first year students from the moment they step onto campus with an 8 minute orientation activity. In a small group, highly interactive process, students explore current controversial scenarios and are challenged to make informed and reasonable judgments based on evidence and observation. The goal: capture their natural curiosity and get them excited about research, information, discovery, and evaluation.

Assessment of Medical Students' Use of eBooks

Description/Abstract:: The University of Cincinnati Health Sciences Library (HSL) surveyed all first-year medical students about electronic books (eBooks) purchased for the first-year curriculum and conducted a usage analysis. The HSL wanted to determine the extent to which students use eBook versions if required for the curriculum or if they continue to use print versions, and to analyze eBook usability, ease of use, and overall student satisfaction.

Name Authority Control and Researcher Identity Management
