Covers principles of taste and origin of language up to the epic and dramatic forms. Makes a (new?) distinction between rhetoric and belles-lettres. The first chapter on language covers: origin and progress of language, origin and progress of writing, structure of language (in two parts). Chapter two (style) covers: perspicuity and precision and structure of sentences (in three parts). Chapter three (figurative language) covers: origin and nature of figurative language, metaphor, hyperbole, comparison—antithesis—interrogation—etc., and general character of style. Chapter four (components of a regular discourse) covers: introduction—division—narration, argument—pathos—peroration, pronunciation and delivery. Chapter five is beauty and sublimity.
