  • Dragon and Taotie Motifs on a 12th-Century B.C.E. Fangyi Bronze Ritual Wine Vessel

    This 12th Century B.C.E. Bronze Wine Vessel comes from the Anyang Province in China, dating to the Shang Dynasty, one of the earlier dynasties that ruled in ancient China. The shape of the vessel is a rectangular prism with a square base and 4 thick legs. The lid of this Fangyi is a roughly pyramidal shape with a knob that echoes the shape of the lid. This wine vessel was used for ceremonial purposes, most likely for ancestral worship. Not particularly used for only wine, these vessels also held cooked and raw meat, and grains or other foods, as an offering to the gods and ancestors. Alcohol held in the Fangyi was a liquor, made out of a grain called millet. Comprised of three registers each face of the vessel the same, the bronze is cast and carved to have dragon motifs, taotie masks, and a consistent thunder pattern spiral across the body of the Fangyi. The lid of the Fangyi also has taotie masks on each of sides. The dragons on the body of this vessel represent many things, but most importantly, a harbinger of good luck, prosperity, and consistent success. The taotie masks are elusive in Chinese culture- their original meanings have been lost, but they are thought to represent “animalistic energies… to heal and to offer solace in a world full of diffuse and supernatural forces,” or the finality of death. The spiral pattern is meant to emulate clouds and rolling thunder, symbolizing life-giving rain and abundance.

  • Extracting Actionable Medical Data from a Twitter User’s History During a Medical Emergency

    As technology permeates day-to-day life, people have more and more ways to communicate. These forms of communication create a challenge for Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP). Research has shown people are posting on social media for medical help, but PSAPs do not have a way to receive these messages. This research aims to determine if using keywords and filter words can be used to find the actionable calls for help in the midst of the millions of posts made. Actionable is defined as containing enough information to determine the nature of a medical emergency and if is currently occurring or is recent enough that the poster needs help. To determine if this was true, the most prevalent types of voice medical calls to the Cincinnati Fire Department were determined for 2021. A set of keywords and filter words was created for each call type. Then tweets were captured over a period of seventeen hours and filtered using the word lists. The filtering showed there was a valid way to find actionable tweets, and that people were posting such things. By varying the word lists, the signal-to-noise ratio can be adjusted depending on the desires of the agency. as filtering became more strict, the number of missed actionable tweets increased, while the number of incorrectly labeled as actionable decreased.

  • Suzanne Valadon: Defying the Definition of Gender in Life and Art

    If life is said to imitate art, then Suzanne Valadon’s rebellious, unorthodox, bohemian lifestyle is reflected in her artworks. Valadon's choice of the nude as the primary focus of much of her work reveals much about her role in society. A as a member of the working-class, Valadon was able to step outside the domestic and painted within the traditionally male domain. The art of Suzanne Valadon has been reprised in recent years as feminist art historians have been questioning the art historical canon and challenging the ideology of the nude as a masculine domain. This paper will discuss Valadon’s time as a model, what influence this had on her works, and her relationship with Edgar Degas, her family, and female contemporaries. It will also examine why Valadon chose the nude as the primary focus of much of her works and what this says about her role in society. Through this study, I hope to give better insight on why Valadon’s works were championed during her life, but the recognition faded after her death. Through her work, Valadon challenged not only the rules of the day, but she reclaimed the female nude in her work, the woman was no longer an object to be viewed but a subject in her own right.

  • Views from the Window: Conveying Harmony Under Different Atmospheric Conditions in Camille Pissarro’s Boulevard Montmartre Series

    The only artist to be featured at all eight Impressionist Exhibitions in Paris was Camille Pissarro. The Impressionist movement emerged during a period of rapid social change and growing industrialization with more people moving to cities. In Pissarro’s works, he specifically concentrated on the conditions of different weather and times of day to alter how he painted scenes of a city. My paper focuses on the Boulevard Montmartre series and his use of building tonal relationships and skill of lighting placement across the fourteen paintings in order to establish a harmonious composition where the day’s essence radiates off the canvas.

  • Immersive Inclusion: Diversity and Inclusion Training Using Virtual Reality

    An exploration of the use of virtual reality technology in the context of diversity and inclusion training. This manuscript describes two studies: Study 1 was longitudinal and investigated the impacts of a VR-based bias training. Cognitive and affective empathy levels and impact on behavior, attitude, and knowledge before and after the training were measured to test the hypotheses that (H1) cognitive empathy levels would increase and (H2) individuals with higher initial levels of empathy would demonstrate more pronounced changes in cognitive empathy following the training. H1 was supported but larger changes were found in affective empathy levels. H2 was also supported as individuals with higher initial empathy levels showed higher levels of cognitive empathy after the training compared to individuals with lower initial empathy levels. However, again, larger differences were found in affective empathy levels. Qualitative data revealed a lasting impact nine weeks after the training that was not present in the quantitative data. Study 2 surveyed healthcare professionals who previously participated in a VR-based DEI training that focused on social determinants of health and empathy in healthcare professionals. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the longitudinal impacts of a VR-based DEI training by gathering qualitative data from the participants at least a year after they went through the training. The respondents reported a lasting influence from the training. Reasons for the discrepancy between the qualitative and quantitative results are discussed as are implications for organizations and future DEI training development and research.

  • Wireless Sensor Monitoring Water Use at Fixtures

    The Dataset contains raw data that indicates the start and stop time of water flowing at fixtures in the Marian Spencer Hall Cafeteria restroom during hours of operation. The data were collected as part of an effort to develop and test a novel method of measuring flow to calculate the probability that the fixture is busy (fixture p-value). The fixture p-value is one of the parameters necessary to predict peak demand in buildings for pipe sizing purposes. There are two .csv files, a README file and a sample of the data collection template with contact information. The dataset also contains a MATLAB code written to accept data in the suggested format and estimate the fixture probability of use.

  • Tecumseh Biography

    This is a biography of the Shawnee tribal chief Tecumseh. The early childhood of Tecumseh is researched all the way to his death at the Battle of Thames in 1813 in this biography that sticks to the truth and cites sources from different authors. Originally this research project was just a capstone project for a class but as the research accumulated, I found the need to create this biography about Tecumseh. Tecumseh made a confederation of like-minded tribes to combat the encroaching United States' government in the late 18th century and early 19th century. All the information that is presented in the biography has been researched and edited. With more than 50 hours of research involved with this biography, the historical contributions regarding The War of 1812 are noteworthy and the contributions made regarding the killer of Tecumseh are found in this biography as well. This isn't a complete overview of Tecumseh's life, but rather this biography details the life of a Shawnee in a time rich with civil strife during the expansion of the United States after the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. The Heritage Village Musuem in Sharonville, Ohio allowed for me to intern during the summer of 2022 to bolster the accuracy of this biography.

  • Examining the energy performance of older and historic building using municipal benchmarking data

    Until recently, nationally representative survey data has been the primary source of information on the energy performance of buildings in the U.S., relative to their year of construction. The emergence of municipal energy benchmarking ordinances and public availability of benchmarking datasets now makes it possible to explore these relationships at the local level, and to link this data with information about a building’s historic designation status. This paper presents results from an initial statistical analysis examining the relationships between building energy use, year of construction, and historic designation status. First, municipal benchmarking data from six U.S. cities is used to examine local trends in the relationship between building age and energy performance. Second, an exploratory analysis of the energy performance of designated historic compared to non-historic buildings in New York City is presented. The methods described in this paper could be applied more widely to benchmarking datasets from other cities.
