    Varieties of International Cyber Strategies (VoICS): Text Analysis of National Cybersecurity Documents is a project that compares and contrasts the three main approaches to conceptualize national cybersecurity strategies (NSS): deterrence, norm-based approach (NBA) and cyber persistence engagement (CPE). Scholars and policymakers have initially conceptualized NSS in terms of deterrence or NBA. More recent academic research has demonstrated that these frameworks are inadequate for cyber space. As a result, Cyber Persistence Engagement (CPE) emerged as a third option. The 1.3 version of the VoICS dataset on National Cybersecurity Strategies focuses on nations in Europe and North America and includes a total of 77 NCS of the states in the North Atlantic Area—NATO allies, EU members and Switzerland—released from 2003 until the end of 2023. It consists of 27 variables, including country and strategy identifiers, EU and NATO membership, their respective accession dates, and total length of the documents. VoICS include eighteen variables representing different measures of relative and absolute weights of the three NSS types—deterrence, NBA and CPE. The 2.1 version of the VoICS dataset consists of 260 documents across the globe released from 2001 to 2025, including the documents listed in the earlier datasets. It consists of 31 variables, including country and strategy identifiers, document issue dates, links to issue date sources, the documents’ full name and whether the document is in English or has been translated. VoICS 2.1 dataset includes eighteen variables representing different measures of relative and absolute weights of the three NSS types—deterrence, NBA and CPE using the latest dictionary of words and phrases. Additionally, the database has two separate datasets. The first one contains information about sub-national strategies issued by specific national agencies such as ministries or departments (e.g. ministry of defense, ministry of information and/ or digitization, ministry of foreign affairs and others), national cybersecurity agencies, and others. The second one includes data about relevant cybersecurity strategy documents issued by various international organizations. Both datasets will be made available later. The text analysis in the VoICS in the 1.0-2.1datasets is based on official NSS documents provided by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence library and ENISA’s interactive map for National Cyber Security Strategies. Both sources rely on voluntary submission from the member states. Unfortunately, some official documents were not available or accessible or were not listed at all. Authors have used various sources and contacts with a variety of cyber attachés in Brussels to determine if any additional strategies were released and to obtain the missing documents. The 18 text analysis variables compare and contrast the extent to which different NCS are associated with a specific strategy. They represent different frequency scores based either on words, phrases, or words and phrases combined. These calculations are associated with either deterrence, NBA, or CPE in each strategy. The authors have generated respective dictionaries for the three strategic ideas through which each of these approaches are operationalized. We have conducted a text analysis using WordStat text analysis software by Provialis ( https://provalisresearch.com/products/content-analysis-software/). Detailed codebooks for VoICS Datasets Versions 1.1 thru 2.1 along with the NSS dictionaries (versions 1.0 thru 2.1) have been included in this collection/ repository. The process of generating dictionary associated with the three cybersecurity approaches involved several steps. First, upon reviewing the literature, the authors generated independently a list of words and phrases associated with each type of cybersecurity strategy. Second, the authors compared their lists to determine the degree of overlap in dictionary. Those words and phrases that included in at least two different lists were reviewed and, if there was consensus, were incorporated in the dictionary. Finally, words and phrases which were identified in only one of lists were once again reviewed and, in case there was a consensus among the authors, these were also included in the dictionary. Third, the lists of words and phrases associated with each NCS were updated on several instances when the authors agreed on the need to update and optimize their content. This project was supported by the University of Cincinnati's undergraduate summer research at the University Honors Program in 2025 and 2026, where UHP Discover students are engaged in full-time summer research with UC faculty mentors in different disciplines across social sciences, humanities education, business, arts, and other disciplines. The authors are grateful for the research assistance and support provided by Nora Meier (2025) and Shifan Rashid (2026). This NSS database provides important insights into how states in Europe, North America and the rest of the world conceptualize their national cybersecurity strategies. It is an excellent tool for researchers and policymakers to study the evolution of strategic thinking around the globe and to explore its different independent and dependent effects.

    Major depressive episode (MDE) among adolescents is a significant public health issue. Approximately, 4.5 million adolescents have experienced an MDE in the past year. This study examined whether MDEs among adolescents differed based on specific parenting behaviors. A national sample of adolescents ages 12 to 17 years (n = 11,572) completed the 2023 National Survey of Drug use and Health. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine whether lifetime and past year MDE differed based on parenting behaviors. Results indicated that adolescents at highest risk for both lifetime and past-year MDE were female, older (14-15 or 16-17-years-old), and white. Regarding parenting behaviors, adolescents at highest risk for lifetime and past-year MDE were those who had parents never/seldom check their homework, never/seldom help with their homework, never/seldom limit the amount of TV, never/seldom tell them they did a good job, never/seldom tell them they were proud of them, and who argued/fought with them ten or more times in the past year. These findings show the intricate relationship between adolescent MDE and parenting behaviors. Public health educators should encourage parents to engage in authoritative parenting behaviors (defined as high levels of parental support, warmth, and clear expectations) to help prevent MDE among adolescents. Findings should be used to assist program developers in incorporating parenting components in MDE prevention and treatment efforts.

    This research analyzes the "syndemic" of mental stress and physical pain among 299 unregulated laborers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Results reveal that psychological distress increased the risk of physical injury by 28-fold, highlighting a critical link between economic instability and worker health. These findings offer urgent parallels to the U.S. "gig economy," where delivery and warehouse workers face similar occupational injustices without safety nets. The presentation moves beyond ergonomics to propose a Social Justice Framework, challenging attendees to advocate for ethical supply chains and for mental health protections for vulnerable workers, both globally and locally.

    Adult hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) sustain the lifelong production of all mature blood and immune cells. HSCs possess extensive regenerative potential, but their self-renewal is limited. A long-standing question has been why replicative history negatively impacts HSC functions. We found that accrued divisions alter HSC production; generating low-output bone-marrow landscapes that are highly variable in lineage contribution and transcriptionally divergent within individual lineages. Division-driven HSC functional alterations arise from redirecting branched chain amino acid (BCAA) usage from catabolic towards anabolic activity, causing faster HSC cell cycle kinetics. Adding a BCAA transamination product overcomes the BCAA catabolic checkpoint and slows down the cell cycle, durably rescuing balanced lineage output of HSCs with accrued divisions. Hence, our study suggests the paradigm whereby replicative history causes metabolic and transcriptional drift, generating divergent HSC output. Division-dependent HSC functional drift can be restored by metabolite replacement, which has long-term therapeutic implications for HSC regenerative medicine.

    The computer metaphor of mind and brain states broadly that the brain is the control organ for the body. This implies that brain (including mind) and physical body are separable from each other and the physical and social environment. Given the dominance of computing technology in daily life, many brain researchers and subsequently also engineers are furthermore compelled to take brain-computer analogies not as metaphors but as literal descriptions of brain function. These two fundamental assumptions manifest as overwhelming challenges when pursuing synthetic rather than analytic approaches, i.e., when we attempt to computationally control artificial bodies such as robots, especially when co-located with humans. I will discuss the computational brain metaphor from the perspective of bodies for whom computational control is a reality – robots, and their creators – engineers. Rather than presenting new metaphors, I will use evidence from control engineering and human-robot interaction to argue for a shift of thought: if we can enrich how engineers approach robotic control, new robots could offer powerful momentum to shifting the scientific opinion towards embracing a less dualistic, more holistic view of the brain’s embedding in body and world.

    Latent variables and causal inference are central to implementing empirical research and advancing substantive theory across the social sciences. Conventional latent variable frameworks such as structural equation modeling (SEM) are constrained by several simplifying assumptions (e.g., linearity, additivity, correct model specification). In this study, we relax key SEM assumptions by building data adaptive estimation methods for causal inference with latent variables. We developed a theory-driven Targeted After Generative (TAG) learning framework that integrates SEM-informed variational autoencoders (SEM VAEs) with targeted machine learning to estimate the average treatment effect. On the generative side, the SEM VAE encodes theory aligned neural networks that learn latent variable distributions through flexible joint modeling of measurement and structural parameters. On the targeted learning side, we construct an efficient influence function for the treatment effect with the SEM-VAE implied posterior distribution of the latent variables to estimate the average effect. Across simulations, the TAG learning approach outperforms alternative approaches and demonstrates low to no bias even in adverse conditions. TAG learning offers a theory-driven flexible approach with methodological promise for causally interpretable data-adaptive analysis with latent variables. More practically, the framework allows estimation of causal effects involving latent variables even in the presence of unknown functional relationships in the measurement and structural models (e.g., data adaptive effect estimation for nonlinear/nonadditive SEMs).

    This archeometric study analyzed local clay deposits at the Ingels Family Farm, settled in the Early Nineteenth Century in Bourbon County Kentucky. The redware pottery made on site was bartered and sold in the region, and the clay deposits were also used to make the bricks that constructed the 1820 Ingels family residence, still extant as of May 2026. Numerous materials characterization techniques including XRD, XRF, DTA/TGA, Spectroscopy, wet chemical analysis, and SEM were used to determine the characteristics of the local clay deposit and the identifying characteristics of the redware. The study also tested the wares to determine an approximate firing range, which was consistent with the requirements of low-to-mid fired earthenware. This study was done using archaeological materials from a previous archaeological investigation of the farm, but new material was added with the assistance the USDA Soil Survey Office in Kentucky, who drilled core samples for the project in Spring 2012.

    Raja Ravi Varma’s representation of apsaras is a cultural shift from the traditional Indian visual culture that focused on their bodies and promiscuity. Ravi Varma emphasizes the spiritual significance of apsaras in Hindu mythology and uses cultural symbolism to demonstrate their individual impact. Apsaras in Indian temple art are objectified and depicted as passive objects, which misrepresents their significance in Hindu mythology and spiritual enlightenment. The evolution of apsara representation is caused by cultural shifts and mythological research that centers women as independent subjects. Ravi Varma combines European and Indian art traditions to normalize the Indian culture of nudity and sensuality.     Modern industrial equipment are networked to interact with both internal and external systems, enabling automated decision-making with minimal or no human intervention. While this new environment creates efficiencies, it exposes the environment to cyber threats. This chapter explores the use of cybersecurity testbeds to study best practices in architecting and defending environments that contain industrial systems. Cybersecurity testbeds – physical, virtual, and hybrid – are used in different sectors for research and validation. Virtual testbeds hold promise as they enable design flexibility, reconfiguration, and scale to support various types of research studies. This chapter discusses the value of virtual cybersecurity testbeds and demonstrates a case study on the use of virtual testbeds using a simple industrial control system and a common attack. The concepts apply to more complex set ups and more complex attack structures. Virtual cybersecurity testbed can support researchers, practitioners, and educators interested in defending critical infrastructure environments and industrial systems.

    Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder commonly characterized by centrofacial erythema, papules, pustules, vascular instability, and ocular involvement. Although extensively studied in lighter skin tones, significant disparities remain in the diagnosis, detection, and treatment of rosacea in individuals with skin of color. This review examines current literature regarding rosacea in melanin-rich skin with emphasis on prevalence, biomarkers, pathophysiology, diagnostic challenges, Demodex folliculorum involvement, and treatment approaches. Current diagnostic standards rely heavily on visible erythema and telangiectasia, which are often less apparent in darker skin tones, contributing to underdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Research also suggests differences in inflammatory biomarkers, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and vascular responses in skin of color. Treatment methods including topical therapies, lifestyle modifications, and laser-based thermal therapies are reviewed alongside their limitations and risks in melanated skin. Emerging diagnostic technologies, such as computer-aided imaging systems and biomarker-based approaches, demonstrate potential for improving diagnostic accuracy across diverse populations. Overall, this review highlights the need for more inclusive research, improved clinical education, and culturally competent diagnostic criteria to better address rosacea in underrepresented populations and reduce disparities in dermatologic care.

    “In my opinion, wherever there is a public, there is a sacred place. When there is no public, there is no performance because there is no dialogue,” claimed Marina Abramović (b. 1946) in conversation with Italian art critic and contemporary art historian Achille Bonito Oliva. For Abramović, the presence of an audience is constitutive to performance. Performance art has frequently been defined by its provocative impulse, functioning as a responsive and unstable form that artists have turned to when engaging with political, cultural, or social pressures, and when seeking to unsettle the conventions of more established artistic disciplines. These sentiments are conveyed by her first performance works, The Rhythm Series (1973-1974). Over the course of two years, she completed five separate performances that explored the physical limits of the body and the relationship between performer and audience. Abramović performed Rhythm 0 (1974), the fifth and final work, at the gallery Studio Morra in Naples, Italy, from 8 pm to 2 am. She placed seventy-two objects on a table that could cause the human body extreme pleasure or pain, including but not limited to objects like a comb, lipstick, paint, a feather, a bone of lamb, cake, and a gun. Instructions posted on the wall declared: “I am the object. During this period I take full responsibility.” This experiment used the art space to expose what audiences are capable of when social inhibition is suspended and moral responsibility is left unguided. This paper asks, in her performance Rhythm 0, how does Abramović's deliberate surrender of bodily agency transforms the audience from passive observers into ethically implicated subjects, forcing an intersubjective encounter with the artist that exposes unconventional, if not revolutionary, social conditions governing the art space?

    This paper explores queer artist Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt (b. 1948) and his piece titled Allegory of the Stonewall Riot (Statue of Liberty Fighting for Drag Queen, Husband, and Home) (1969). I take a biographical approach to the paper, dissecting Lanigan-Schmidt’s childhood and young adult life living as a queer street kid in the 1960s. I follow him to New York City, where he continued creating his kitsch style art and started getting recognized for it. Outside of his artistic endeavors, Lanigan-Schmidt would catch himself hanging out at The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, The Stonewall Inn was unexpectedly raided by the police. At a time when being queer was criminalized, the patrons of Stonewall had had enough and fought back against the police, sparking a riot that turned into a weeks-long protest. Lanigan-Schmidt was in attendance that night and joined the fight for gay liberation. It was this night that inspired his creation, Allegory of the Stonewall Riot (Statue of Liberty Fighting for Drag Queen, Husband, and Home). By analyzing the contextual importance of The Stonewall Inn and the riots that ensued, I show how Allegory of the Stonewall Riot reflects queer life in the 1960s. In the art historical canon, queer art is largely underrepresented. However, in this paper I show how Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt and Allegory of the Stonewall Riot deserve a place in the art historical canon

    Throughout the seventeenth century, ideas of the occult and mystique of witchcraft consumed public interest in artistic circles in Florence, Italy. Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), an Italian artist from Naples, participated in this movement from 1640 until his death. As interests in the occult heightened during his time in Florence, he participated in suspicions of witchcraft through his Scenes of Witchcraft (1645-1649). Located at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the series consists of four tondi, each portraying a witch with harrowing spectators at different times of the day. However, to ensure his esteemed prominence, he returned to Rome and produced religious works. The macabre interests that captivated Rosa in Scenes of Witchcraft (1645-49) became a vehicle of undermining the church through The Shade of Samuel Appears to Saul (1668) when the artist returned to Rome. In this paper I propose that through shared iconography, The Shade of Samuel Appears to Saul is a painting of witchcraft, and serves to undermine the authority of the church. Witches or other necromancing subjects were accepted solely to elevate the morality of biblical characters. By giving the witch of Endor agency, Rosa is offering an alternative subject that serves to rival the power of God.

    This project will explore the artist Leonora Carrington’s Self-portrait (Inn of the Dawn Horse, ca. 1937-38) and its relationship to and rejection of the male-centric, sexist ideology of psychoanalysis that governed the Surrealist movement. As outlined in Andre Breton's First Manifesto of Surrealism (1924), Freudian psychoanalysis had a great influence on Breton, the movement's founder (1896-1966). He believed in Freud's tenets and theories regarding dreams and the unconscious as a liberating and radical force that could tear down society’s systems of oppression. Yet there is a willful ignorance in Breton’s philosophy on the deep-rooted misogyny of Freud’s psychology and how the institution of psychoanalysis ignores the realities of female development and existence within inherently sexist societal structures of that period. However, Leonora Carrington rejected psychoanalytic theory as it pertained to her art. She refused to be categorized within sexist ideologies and asserted herself as a creative artist with her own interpretations of her work, positing her own ideologies in the process. She demonstrated her identity through her work and found liberation by developing her own feminist consciousness. Through researching Carrington's work, I want to expand on her ability to challenge the sexist paradigms of Surrealism and to reaffirm how her rejection demonstrates that female nonconformity is not only revolutionary but also necessary for female artistic freedom today. Other scholars have delved into this driving aspect of Carrington’s work but I will be utilizing Helene Cixous’ concept of “ecritutre feminine” in order to demonstrate how Carrington developed a “pictorial language” of her own within her work Self-Portrait (Inn of the Dawn Horse). I will use Cixous’ seminal work, "The Laugh of the Medusa," to expand on this idea and how Carrington developed that language, constituted of her own personal symbols, which is on full display in her self-portrait.
