Argues for the importance of historical study for scholarship in the grammar of modern English. Based in the study of English grammars over a span of two hundred years. Recommends the work of O. F. Emerson, A. C. Champneys, and Lounsbury. Strives to move away from grammar instruction based on memorization to instruction based on induction. Includes "test questions" at the end of each lecture.
