many th£ngs. In the long run it will secure the best results
"to make haste slowiy," and to securely .fasten in the minds
of th~ pupils each new principle taught, before p:oceeding to
the conquest of fresh ground.

TO THE TEA CHER.

The diagram will be found of great use in correcting an
incomplete sentence, as, A girl who hved in Boston.
We draw the diagram and ask what the subject of the
sentence is, what its modifiers are, and we have

I

who lived in Boston
We find that we arc without a predicate, and the class having been taught from the beginning that both a subject and a
preuicate arc essenti al elements of a sentence, are quite
shocked at the deficiency, and imm ed iately set about reconstructing the se nte ncL'.
The possessive and objective cases of the rdrative pronoun s,
whose and whom, will ue given as soon as the nomin ative is
mastered.
Ilnt sufficient work }1 as alrea<ly been given, or rather s uggested; for one year.
Keep up the practice of memo ri zi ng language. Give dail y
exercises in questions and answers, using eve ry story as a
basis. Frame the questions so as to require the pupils to
th1"nk.
· ·-·
The stories may a\so be used for reading exercises. Let
the pupils read the story carefu lly several tirnes. Th en g ive
them a set of test questions to find whether tl1 ey h ave tl1e
m eaning, n ot the book language, but simply the id eas.
Answers to these questions, in the pupils' own language, are
m ore satisfactory.
