- In its recent strategic planning effort, the University of Cincinnati Libraries (UCL) identified assessment as one of five strategic directions. The overall goal is to “ensure library user input into decision making about collections, services, and facilities.” While UCL has participated in LibQUAL+ regularly since 2002, and conducted other studies, UCL’s Transforming the UC Library User Experience, Strategic Plan 2011-2014, places increased focus and importance on gathering information and data from and about our users to inform decisions. The presenters will share their experience developing an assessment plan for UCL and initial efforts in building a culture of assessment. The design, methodology and approach of two focused surveys, that are a part of our coordinated plan of assessment, will be shared.

- Panel presentation at the 2014 UC's Diversity Conference:Join a panel of students and librarians who will showcase their collaborative events focused on exploring cultures through personal experiences and library resources. The most recent event, Across Nations: Diversity Speaks, was a big success thanks to student engagement at all stages of planning and presentation. International and study abroad students planned, publicized and moderated the event. Student contributions ranged from social media publicity to the icebreaker – a culture shock video - to preparing ethnic foods and wearing traditional clothing. Most importantly, the inclusive and open dialog at the event allowed students to share their perceptions of other countries, including misconceptions that were corrected by students from those countries. The event serves as a model for utilizing student expertise and enthusiasm for enhancing cross cultural understanding and global engagement.

- Lloyd C. Engelbrecht (born 1927) is Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Cincinnati. In collaboration with his late wife, June-Marie F. Engelbrecht (1930-2009), he has been researching, writing about and speaking about architect and designer Henry C. Trost (1860-1933) and his family firm of Trost & Trost. On May 8, 2014, Lloyd Engelbrecht was invited to speak at the University of Texas at El Paso as part of a Trost symposium. The following is an excerpt from the official announcement of the symposium: In celebration of Trost’s architectural legacy, UTEP Special Collections will host the “Trost Lecture Series” at 6 p.m. May 8 [2014] in the UTEP Library, Blumberg Auditorium, room 111. The event will feature speakers Dr. Troy Ainsworth, executive director of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail Association (CARTA); Joe and Lanna Duncan, owners of the Trost-designed El Capitan Hotel in Van Horn, Texas and El Paisano Hotel in Marfa, Texas; and Dr. Lloyd Engelbrecht, co-author of Henry C. Trost: Architect of the Southwest. A public exhibit featuring family photos, sketches, blueprints and photographs of the buildings Trost designed in El Paso and throughout the Southwest will be on display May 10 in the UTEP Library’s atrium on the third floor. The lecture and exhibit were part of Trost Week, May 3-10, 2014, which was organized by the Texas Trost Society, a new nonprofit group that advocates for the preservation of Trost & Trost architecture.

- As an increasing number of universities expand programs globally, libraries are seen as an essential partner for this endeavor. Some library units are fully or semi-fully integrated into these academic programs. The University of Cincinnati (Ohio, USA) and Chongqing University (Chongqing, China) introduced the first co-operative engineering education program in China in 2013. Since this time, the University of Cincinnati library has been striving to connect American faculty and Chinese students in three main areas: 1.utilizing library websites and social media for reference, instruction, and outreach; 2.playing a peer role for traveling faculty with course materials, elearning, and basic technical support; 3.developing a sustainable relationship with matching librarians in Chongqing for collection development and beyond. This presentation is intended to share experience and practices with librarians in similar positions, as well as administrators looking to develop a similar position.
